A driver is facing prosecution before the courts after gardai seized what they allege is a "dangerously defective" pick-up truck.

According to a post on social media, highlighting the detection, several safety issues were identified when the silver Toyota Hilux was stopped by gardai during an operation earlier this week.

The operation, which was supported by the Road Safety Authority, was carried out near Listowel in County Kerry.

A spokesperson confirmed the vehicle was detained, under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act as the driver did not have insurance and there was no certificate of road worthiness.

Gardai sat that upon further inspection, the pick-up truck was "found to be dangerously defective".

According to the post, the vehicle's chassis was cracked on both sides while concerns were also identified in relation to the condition of the tyres.

The vehicle was subsequently seized and court proceedings have been initiated against the driver.

Reacting to the post, social media users have praised gardai for taking a "deadly weapon" off the roads while another joked that the driver mustn't have had the time "for paperwork".

As the matter is before the courts, gardai have not publicly disclosed any further information relating to the incident.
