Over 7,000 asylum seekers arrived in Ireland in the first four months of 2024, according to new figures.
Statistics released by the Department of Justice show that there has been a 95% increase in asylum seekers applying for international protection in Ireland this year.
Some 7,080 asylum seekers arrived here between January and April, compared to 3,628 in the same tired period in 2023.
Questions surrounding the accommodation of these people are ongoing, with the number of tents steadily rising on the Grand Canal in Dublin, now reaching over 80.
The asylum seekers remain approximately 100 yards from the International Protection Office (IPO), where 100 tents were cleared last week.
Taoiseach Simon Harris has said a 'multiagency meeting' has taken place this Tuesday, with a view of moving asylum seekers from the Grand Canal into alternative accommodation.
