Funeral details announced for former RTÉ news2day presenter Nick Sheridan

The late Nick Sheridan was from Wexford

Funeral details have been announced for BBC journalist Nick Sheridan, who is to be laid to rest this week.

The former RTÉ news2day presenter died from a brain aneurysm at the age of 32, on March 6. 

Nick was originally from Wexford, he was both a children's author and a journalist.

After obtaining a journalism degree from DCU, he worked with had worked for RTÉ for three years before moving to Glasgow. In Scotland, he first worked for STV News before moving on to a role at BBC Scotland.

He will be reposing at Hammel's Funeral Home, Kilmuckridge (Y25 C9T3) on Tuesday, March 12 from 2pm, concluding with prayers at 7.30pm.

Funeral arriving to St Ibar's Church, Castlebridge on Wednesday for Funeral Mass at 11am, followed by a private committal for family and close friends at Mount Jerome Crematorium.

Since the tragic news broke out, tributes have been pouring in for Nick, who has been described as a 'hugely talented journalist' by many of his colleagues. 

Former minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, paid tribute to Nick.

“So terribly sad to read this. It is truly awful. Nick was young, talented, vivacious, and full of potential. What a horrible, senseless loss. My thoughts are with his family, colleagues and many friends,” Ms Sturgeon wrote in tribute.

Gary Smith, Head of News and Current Affairs at BBC Scotland, called him a “wonderful colleague and a hugely talented journalist”.

“Nick has been a wonderful colleague. He was a hugely talented journalist, presenter and author - and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around them. Funny, clever, kind. A lovely man,” said Gary Smith.

“Our hearts go out to his parents, to his partner and to all his family and friends,” he added.

“I cannot believe I've written this. Nick was the funniest, sharpest and best of hosts. He soothed me over many TV nerves and was just the loveliest, loveliest of men. What a ridiculous loss this is. Love to all Nick's family, colleagues and friends,” paid broadcaster Catriona Stewart in tribute.

Formerly of Kilmuckridge and Kilcorral in Co Wexford, Nick passed unexpectedly but peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Glasgow.

Beloved son of Nick and Bernie, Nick will be sadly missed by his heartbroken parents, partner Lewis, brother Brian, grandmother Maura, sister-in-law Vivienne, godson Seán, niece Sadhbh, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and his wide circle of friends and colleagues in Ireland and Scotland.

Nick’s family wished to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of the neurological department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the "exceptional care" Nick received during his short illness.

May he rest in peace.
