Counting under way in two referendums as early tallies suggest No votes

Counting is under way in the two referendums on the family amendment and care amendment.

Almost 3.5 million citizens were eligible to vote yesterday, however the turnout across the country was mixed as polling stations closed at 10pm on Friday.

As there are no tally people present in a lot of count centres, a clear picture of the likely results might be slow to emerge.

Early tallies in Ringsend and Tipperary showed the result of the two referendums leaning towards no.

Former Labour Party politician, Kevin Humphreys, shared a picture of early tallies in Dublin South Central, which shows the result leaning towards no.

Early indications suggest that both referendums will return a significant ‘No’ vote in Co Clare.

In the referendums, the government proposes an expanded definition of the family in the Constitution and to replace the language surrounding women in the home.

The family amendment would expand the definition of the family beyond relationships based on marriage, but based on “durable relationships” too.

The care amendment would remove the clause in the Constitution that references a woman’s life and a mother’s duties in the home and instead replace it with a recognition of care within the family.
