THE MOTHER of one of two teenage girls reportedly assaulted on a local greenway has called for the amenity to be closed, describing the incident as a “heinous crime.”
The two 17-year-olds were reportedly “badly beaten” on the Castletroy Greenway in an unprovoked attack.
Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating reports of an assault that occurred in Castletroy on Saturday, February 24.
Speaking on Live95, one of the victim’s mothers, who spoke anonymously, described the attack on her young daughter.
“It was a physical assault and a verbal assault,” said the mother, adding that her daughter had been “dragged to the ground by the hair, kicked into the face, prevented from getting off the ground, and punched in the face.”
“All the time she was experiencing a barrage of explicit verbal abuse by this group of girls who are not known to them,” she added.
The mother said the Government needs to “take immediate action” to provide a location for an approved garda station for the area.
“This is the only thing that will start to mitigate further unprovoked attacks in the area,” she added.
According to the mother, until this happens, and CCTV is installed, the Greenway should be closed.
The final section of the Castletroy Urban Greenway was completed in 2021.
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that enquiries are ongoing at this time.
