Gardaí ended speeding driver chase after they drove against oncoming traffic

Gardaí stopped pursuing a driver due the speed they were doing in the interest of public safety, gardaí have confirmed.

The driver was clocked doing 184 kilometres per hour in a 100 kph zone on the N4 road on Sunday morning.

Westmeath gardaí confirmed that the driver failed to stop when prompted to. When they gave chase, the driver proceeded to drive against traffic.

"At that point, in the interest of all public safety, we stood down," gardaí confirmed on a post on social media.

The N4 road is a busy national primary road, which runs from Dublin to the northwest, at Sligo town.
