Fatal two-vehicle incident occurred at Uregare Cross between Bruff and Kilmallock

A WOMAN who was seriously injured in a collision in County Limerick a fortnight ago has tragically passed away just weeks after her father.

The woman has been named locally as Margaret Irwin. She was aged in her 60s. Ms Irwin was rushed to hospital following the two-vehicle road traffic incident at Uregare Cross, Bruff - on the R512 road to Kilmallock. The collision occurred on Thursday, August 27.

Ms Irwin suffered critical injuries which she sadly succumbed to. The tragedy is compounded by Ms Irwin’s father - Andrew (Andy) Connolly, of Knocklong, passing away at the end of July.

Mr Connolly, who was in his 91st year, passed away in University Hospital Limerick where Ms Irwin also went to her eternal reward.

A post on the Thomas Fitzgerald Centre’s Facebook page says that they are terribly upset to hear of the passing of their great friend, supporter and helper Margaret Irwin.

“Margaret passed away after the effects of an accident in Uregare in recent times. Margaret was always willing to help out at the centre whether it be for speeches, knowledge or wisdom.

“She was very proud of her familial connections to the Fitzgerald-Kennedy family, and would rarely miss an event in the Thomas Fitzgerald Centre,” reads the post.

Ms Irwin was a valued volunteer at the centre located in Bruff and could always be relied upon to give her assistance at a moment’s notice.

“Her hands-on approach meant that she would always offer her services when we needed them and her help was always much appreciated.

“A very popular woman, we offer our sympathies to Margaret's beloved family and friends. May our friend rest in peace,” concludes the post.

Countless tributes have been paid to Ms Irwin which paint a picture of a kind, caring and stylish lady who loved her fashion.

“Devastating news.. and her dad only passed away recently. Thinking of her family, especially her twin sister Catherine,” wrote one person.

A former work colleague said: “So sorry to hear of Margaret's passing. I worked with Margaret in University Hospital Limerick and Croom Hospital. Rest in peace Margaret.”

Ms Irwin was described by mourners as “a lovely woman and a fantastic carer”; “a friend to everyone” and “a neighbour and friend we will truly miss”.

One mourner said: “She will be hugely missed in Bruff.”

No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.

May she rest in peace.
