There are less than 120 public EV charging points across Limerick

NEW data shows Limerick is trailing behind other counties with large towns and cities when it comes to the availability of public chargers for Electric Vehicles.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show there were 117 electric vehicle charging points (EVSEs), across the Treaty County at the end of 2025 - the majority of which are operated by ESB.

This is significantly less than most other counties with major cities.

According to the CSO, Dublin had nearly 800 EVSEs, Cork had 355 charging points while Galway had 177.

PlugShare, an app for mapping out publicly accessible charging points, indicates that Limerick city and its environs account for well over half of all charging points in the county.

The app reveals there is a significant gap in south-east Limerick.

Areas such as Hospital and Herbertstown are entirely without publicly accessible electric vehicle chargers.

The nearest options for motorists are charging stations in Kilmallock (one) and Garryspillane, where there are two.

Ballyneety, the soon-to-be host of the Junior Ryder Cup, also lacks any form of electric vehicle charging.

The shortage of public EV chargers in east Limerick was raised at the September meeting of Cappamore - Kilmallock Municpal District.

It was noted that a number of new chargers are due to come online in the coming months and that the local authority is engaging with ESB Networks regarding a wider roll-out.
