PEOPLE are being given the chance to have their say on council’s August Animations initiative, which involves the closure of some city streets to motorised vehicles.
As part of the scheme, Mayor John Moran is offering free use of designated city centre streets, prioritising people and activities over vehicles.
For the second year in a row, an area around the Daniel O’Connell monument at the Crescent in the city centre will be closed to motor traffic.

It’s the second year in a row this part of the city is to be transformed from a carriageway to an area for people to hang out, play games, enjoy picnics and play sports among other things.
In a public notice, the council has confirmed that it is planning for the Crescent to be closed from its junction with Hartstonge Street to its junction of Barrington Street and Newenham Street.
There will be diversions for motor vehicles around the site.
On top of this, it is also proposed to close Baker Place on the five Sundays in August as part of the same initiative, as well as John’s Square on the same dates.
Honan’s Quay is also proposed to be closed for the entire month of August.
These plans are not final, however, and there is a consultation period.
People who want to lodge an objection, support the idea, or make any other suggestions are being encouraged to contact Limerick City and County Council.
Do this by emailing roads@limerick.ie, or writing to the roads department at Limerick City and County Council’s offices in Dooradoyle.
The deadline is on Tuesday at 4pm.
