Congestion along South Circilar Road
ALMOST 600 people have signed a petition calling for plans to eliminate dozens of parking spaces along a city street to be looked at again.
Construction is set to begin on a series of Active Travel measures between the Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooradoyle, along South Circular Road to the city centre.
These include bike lanes, raised table junctions, traffic calming measures and dedicated crossing points.

It comes after the proposals were passed by metropolitan councillors in 2023.
But locals are still upset with what is proposed, and want a fresh round of public consultation on the plans.
“While safe cycling routes are undoubtedly vital for a greener and healthier city, the current plans seem to overlook the enormous traffic burden this will place on surrounding routes like Dock Road, Ballincurra Road, and O’Connell Avenue. As concerned citizens of Limerick city, we are calling for a more informed and strategic approach to these developments,” the petition author wrote in a statement.
They said there are “pressing issues” of extra traffic congestion, extended driving times, heightened air and noise pollution and extended driving times.
“These are real problems that demand thorough consideration and balanced solutions, ensuring that improvements for cyclists do not come at an unsustainable cost to the rest of the community,” the writer adds.
The petition author alleged there has been a lack of public consultation with local residents.
But a spokesperson for Limerick City and County Council disputed this, saying there has been “extensive public consultation” on the proposed scheme before it was approved.
They pointed to meetings with residents, groups, and workshops with elected members.
More than 1,000 submissions were made - some in favour and some in opposition to the Active Travel plans.
