A powerful second half display powered UL into the semi-final of the Fitzgibbon Cup this Wednesday afternoon when they overcame UCD 0-18 to 0-15.
The Brian Lohan managed side trailed 0-9 to 0-5 at half time in a game that was played in their own GAA grounds.
Despite missing injured Clare star Tony Kelly, UL regrouped to secure a three point win.
The win sets up the possibility of an all-Limerick semi-final if Limerick IT can win their quarter-final game.
Ahane’s Dan Morrissey lined out in midfield with Patrickswell’s Kevin O’Brien at corner forward.
UL, who include Ahane’s James Moran among their selectors, were left to rue four early wides when UCD got on top in the first half.
UL were to rely heavily on frees from Jason Forde and John McGrath in that opening half.
But they finally came to life in the second half.
Seven unanswered points on the change of ends turned the Third Level senior hurling championship in favour of the Limerick side.
It took UL just six minutes of the second half to draw level, 0-9 each.
Then they surged forward.
Ahane’s Dan Morrissey was among the scorers, along with Forde, McGrath and Conor Martin as UL went 0-15 to 0-9 clear entering the final quarter.
But there was another purple patch for UCD who hit four successive points to leave the game 0-15 to 0-14 with seven minutes to play.
But UL held on with three quick-fire points easing the tension among the big crowd.
