LIMERICK man Ken McDonald set a new Irish record when winning the Men's Open Lightweight at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships which took place at the University Of Limerick's Sports Arena
McDonald took the gold at last Saturday's event in a time of 1 min 24.2 seconds, just .2 of a second off the world record.
For good measure, the Limerick man also won the 2000m event in a time of 6 mins 32 seconds.
Ken McDonald, who is originally from Ashbrook Gardens on the Ennis Road, is the current World Indoor champion 50+ lightweight in both events. He is a multiple world champion and world record holder.
McDonald, who is a garda instructor in the Garda Training College in Templemore, rows with Shannon Rowing Club.
He has enjoyed a hugely successful rowing career, since starting the sport at the age of 14, with several Irish senior national championships, five World Masters Championships (Water), two European Championships (Water), two world police and fire games championships, three World Indoor Rowing championships, two European indoor rowing championships, three World Records at 1km and another for 2 x24hr Records and several Irish Records.
