GER RYAN CUP FINAL:

Pike Rovers 2 Regional United 1
PIKE Rovers put their name on the Ger Ryan Cup for the first time in their history on Saturday evening when they just edged out Regional United in a dramatic cup tie that saw a last-minute winner by Aaron Cusack decide the tie.
Joint leaders of the League and FAI Cup semi-finalists, Pike were strong favourites going into the tie. In their league meeting between the sides, Pike ran up a 7-0 win and were expected to have a bit to spare.
When the Hoops took the lead inside four minutes, the game looked to be going to script. However Regional had other ideas and they played their way back into the tie to such an extent that had the favourites on their heels for most of the game.
Once Pike took the lead, their intensity dropped and they struggled to regain it as Regional began to dominate.
With just four minutes played a fine overlapping run and cross by Pike captain Keelan Corbett was stopped on the line by United’s Paddy McGrath but Regional didn’t clear their lines and when the ball fell again at Corbett’s feet he delivered into the box where Kaden Deegan Herlihy volleyed home from eight yards.

The strength and speed of the Regional side was causing Pike trouble but it was the Hoops who went closest to scoring when Luke Keating was denied from close range by a superb save from Jay Moroney.

Regional striker Reyan Scanlon broke clear of the Pike defence but was denied by a fine save from Mauritz Palen in the Pike goal.

The same pairing faced up again minutes later when the keeper came out tops again and just before the break the superb Mark Barrett had his shot from inside the box saved at the near post.

After the restart Regional were again on the front foot and Paddy McGrath saw his effort saved by Palen who followed up to deny Scanlon from the rebound.

Shane Franklin gave warning of the threat posed by Pike when he headed inches over the top from a corner kick while Palen denied Scanlon a goal by producing a point-blank stop to keep out his header. The Pike netminder was having a busy time as he went full length to keep out a shot from Ruairi Mullins.

Regional’s pressure eventually bore fruit and with 12 minutes remaining Mullins turned his marker at half way and ran on goal before firing into the far corner.

The goal woke Pike from their slumber and just as the game was heading to extra time Dara McNamara picked up in the middle of the park and played a superb through ball for Aaron Cusack to cut in off his wing and guide the ball home to the delight of the Pike fans.

Pike will be delighted with the result if not the performance but it gives them the opportunity while celebrating to work out the kinks before next weekend’s big FAI game.

Goalkeeper Palen was brilliant on the night with Jamie Mitchell, Ethan Joyce and Kaden Deegan Herlihy also prominent.
Regional had some fine performers also. Mark Barrett was immense for the runners up. His work rate and fitness levels were an inspiration while the silken skilled Paddy McGrath and Stevie Barry also caught the eye.
