LIMERICK hurling star Gearóid Hegarty is among a number of top sports stars who have teamed up with restaurant franchise, Zambrero, ahead of World Hunger Day on Monday, October 16.

This Sunday, Hegarty and top Irish international athlete Sharlene Mawdsley and Dublin rugby player Stacey Flood have set the enormous task of packing 80,000 nutritious meals with the support of St Mary's College in Rathmines, Dublin and the help of over 300 volunteers.

Alongside the meal packing event Zambrero will double donations for every burrito or bowl order, with the mission of ending world hunger with the goal to donate 1 billion meals by 2025.

Speaking at the launch of the meal packing event, decorated Limerick hurler Gearóid Hegarty shared his delight in contributing to such a positive initiative, saying, "It's heart-warming to be a part of something that gives people who need food a chance. Zambrero's dedication to addressing this critical issue is commendable, and I'm thrilled to be involved in this important cause."

The task of packing 80,000 meals is an extremely ambitious given that only 30,000 were packed a similar event in 2022.

Newport AC sprinter Sharlene Mawdsley, expressed her deep belief in Zambrero's mission, stating, "I am honoured to be a part of Zambrero's efforts to combat global hunger. Their commitment to making a difference is truly inspiring. The partnership with St. Mary's College and the goal of packing 80,000 meals on World Hunger Day exemplify the positive change that can happen when communities come together."
