Dream comes true for young Limerick girl as she caddies at prestigious Women's Irish Open

ONE young golfer's dreams came true during the recent KPMG Women's Irish Open in Dromoland Castle, when Limerick student Anna Wilkinson got to caddie for a leading professional on the Ladies European Tour.

Eleven-year-old Anna Wilkinson, a student at Caherline National School, is a keen golfer at Ballyneety Golf Club.

Anna, who comes from a golf-mad family, found herself on the fairways and greens surrounded by the Ladies European Tour's top professional golfers as she got to caddie for Danish tour player, Linette Holmslykke.

The experience to caddy at this prestigious event came about in a bizarre fashion as Anna's mother Louise described.

"Myself and Linette are part of a Facebook group of lady golfers and I saw she was looking for somewhere to stay while playing in Dromoland so we offered her our spare room.

"I was given the opportunity to play in the Pro-Am as well, so once Linette landed we went for a practice round around Ballyneety.

"Later that evening my 15 year-old son doubled over with pain and was rushed to UHL with a bout of appendicitis. After spending the Monday with him in hospital, Linette and Anna were at home and got on like a house on fire."

The Danish golfer insisted on bringing Anna out to Dromoland with her for her practice rounds and got on so well with the Caherline NS student that she asked for her to be her caddy for the official KPMG Women's Irish Open event.

Louise added: "Instead of going back to school, Anna was in Dromoland with some of the best golfers in the world and I think she realised how lucky she was. She came away from the week full of confidence and even how she spoke about the golf after the tournament, she just got completely into it."

Both Louise and her husband Simon are huge golf fans with Simon being one of Ballyneety Golf Club's greenkeepers and Louise competing in the amateur side of the Pro-Am herself.

The memory of caddying for a leading European professional golfer will live on in Anna's memory for years to come.
