OSCAR TRAYNOR TROPHY:
Limerick District League 1 Limerick Desmond League 1
THE Limerick District League played out a 1-1 draw with their neighbours, the Limerick Desmond League to ensure they top their group in the Oscar Traynor Trophy on Sunday.
With the distractions from Santa, shopping and live TV soccer, this was always going to be a game for the committed and that malaise seemed to seep into both sets of players as the second half turned into a non-event.
The fact that both sides progressed as a result of the draw could have something to do with it but in truth it was a rather drab affair.
District will be content to have topped the group and their reward now is a home tie against the Munster Senior League on return from the Christmas break.
The game was only three minutes old when the visitors went within a whisker of taking the lead.
Jake Power’s inswinging corner kick was touched over the bar by Limerick debutant at this level, Shane Pearse of Pallas United and the resultant corner was met at the front post by Joe McAuliffe whose header struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety.
District took full advantage of the let off and took the lead eight minutes later.
Good play down the left between Conor Coughlan and Sean Madigan saw the latter get to the end line and deliver a cross to the back post where the inrunning Leon Daly head powerfully goalward and an unfortunate defender directed the ball away from his keeper to the net.
The visitors responded well and were back on level terms within a minute.
Good work on the left by David Guiry saw him tee up Pa Aherne and the former Mungret front man scored from six yards.
Goalkeeper Pearse was called upon to make two superb saves to keep the visitors at bay. Going low to keep out a shot from Power and going high to the corner to turn away Michael Brosnan’s shot from outside the box.
Pa Aherne had a couple of good chances for the Desmond after the break while Limerick’s best chances fell to Coughlan but he was unable to beat keeper Ryddle.

Mungret took the lead after 20 minutes when Danny McCarthy raced onto a ball over the top and cut inside to fire across goal into the corner.
‘Boro were back on level terms before the break when Aodh O’Hanluain traded passes with Josh Toomey before lifting the ball over the keeper.
The second half brought little in the way of clear chances so penalties were called for to separate the sides.
