Division 1A Cup final:

TWO of the form sides met on Thursday evening in the Division 1A Cup final at Jackman Park as 2023 winners Ballylanders took on Regional ‘B’ who had finished runners-up to Southend in this League.

The boys from county Limerick were hoping to achieve back-to-back cup wins but for most pundits this was always going to be a 50/50 affair. And that's the way it turned out.

On what was a beautiful evening for football at the well manicured Carey's Road venue, the opening exchanges were brisk with some feisty exchanges.

Once the game settled down, it was the holders who carved out the first opening when Bob Ryan with a sublime through ball that was latched on to by Cianan Kiely who, from the angle of the area, hit a crisp effort that Vincent Browne in the Regional goal did well to turn away for a corner that bore no fruit.

Moments later, at the opposite end, a swift and brisk move involving Alan Connors, Steve Gleeson and Rory Phelan saw the latter’s quick-fire ball find Morgan Hanley and his thumping effort just flew past the angle.

After these chances the two well-marshalled defensive lines kept tight tabs on their opposition front players. It was in the final 10 minutes of the half that the two teams almost broke the deadlock.

Firstly, in the 38th minute, the Bally’ boys, with a brisk move involving Tom O'Dwyer, Declan O'Connor and Willie Coffey, before O'Dwyer’s ball was drilled narrowly wide by Eamon O'Mahoney.

In the 43rd minute, a move started by Steve Gleeson saw his probing ball flicked on by Eoghan Killian to the on-running Moran Hanley whose effort just skimmed the upright to leave the final scoreless at the break. Four minutes into the second half and the deadlock was broken as Regional took the lead when Ben Carew’s long clearance was flicked on by Jeff Mannion to the unmarked Oran Flanagan who cut in from the right and drilled a terrific effort into the six yard box and a Ballylanders defender had the misfortune to knock the ball past his own netminder.

Within 90 seconds, Ballylanders will wonder as to how they did not get level when Patrick Lennon's quick fire ball from defence found Bob Ryan who, in turn, quickly shifted it out wide to Padraig McGrath.

McGrath did well to get inside his marker before conjuring up an effort that hit the butt of the upright before rolling along the goal line and was cleared by Steve Gleeson.

After this, Regional's defensive line stood firm dealing with what came their way. Victory was sealed for Regional in the 89th minute as Alan Connors set up Mark Shanahan who quickly found Eoghan O'Donovan free and he finished clinically to leave Regional 2-0 winners in what was a cracking cup final.

Among those to impress for the winners were Vincent Browne, Steve Gleeson, Alan Conor and Roary Phelan, while Ballylanders had Tom O'Dwyer, Pete Lane, Willie Coffey, and Declan O'Connor who impressed.

EARLIER, in the week, on Tuesday last, the final  round of games  in the Division  2 A League took place.
Herbertstown had won this league earlier and they finished the campaign with a 7-0  home win over Murroe, as the goals came through David Hannon, who scored four, while   Kevin Meade  grabbed a hat-trick. After the game, LDL member Albie Coffey presented the Div 2A League Trophy to Herbertstown.
Abbey had a 5-0 victory over Charleville, with  Stuart Barry grabbing a hat-trick,  while there was a brace for  Christopher Keane. Pike also rounded their campaign off with a 4-2 win over Aisling-Annacotty as  Cian O'Neill, Patrick Keane, Keelan Corbett and an own goal  accounted for the Hoops goals.
Meanwhile, Croom,  with goals from Gavin McInerney, who netted a brace  and one goal each from Dylan Moloney and Mark Syimonch as well as  an own goal saw them see off Mungret/Regional 5-6 in an action-packed fixture.
Elsewhere, Meanus and Kilmallock shared four  goals in an entertaining fixture.
Lawson Cup Semi-Final:
Nenagh 2 Janesboro 0
Recently-crowned Premier A winners Janesboro made the trip to Tipp  to take on Nenagh in the penultimate round of the Lawson Cup.
The winners would face Aisling/Annacotty in the prestigious  decider. In any game, a good start can always be vital and in the home team's case it was that.
Three minutes in Nenagh took the lead as their netminder Aaron Savage's long clearance found Dan O'Meara who quickly got in behind the Boro rearguard.
O'Meara  played a delightful ball into Alan Sheehan who produced a sublime finish, as cool as you like, when  lobbing the advancing Boro netminder.
After this goal start by the home outfit the game ebbed and flowed with neither side creating  much in the way of scoring opportunities as midfielders  were having a real ding dong battle.
Just past the half hour mark,  a swift Boro move involving Brendan O'Dwyer, Callum O'Connor and Graham Bourke saw the latter's quick-fire ball into Joshua Toomey.
However, the striker was just off target with a cracking effort to leave Nenagh leading by the slenderous of margins at the half-time break.
On the turn over, both sides carved out openings, but to no avail. In the 65th minute, ‘the Boro’ had a big claim for a penalty denied as straight away Nenagh broke and won a corner.
From the resulting set-piece from  Eamon White,  his perfect delivery found Kieran Barr who headed firmly to  the back of the net.
Moments later, Thomas Clarke had a good opening, but Savage did well to save and with that, Nenagh advanced  to this season's Lawson Cup Final.
The winners were well served by Lee Mowat, Conor McCormack, Ryan Gilmartin and Cillian Scully. Those to impress for the Boro included Eoghan Bourke, Ronan O'Dwyer, Conor Arthur, and Thomas Clarke.
It will be a unique final on this coming Saturday  in Jackman Park as a new name will be inscribed on the famous Lawson Cup with  Aisling-Annacotty and Nenagh doing  battle as to see which club will be confirmed as Lawson Cup winners.
Division 2A Cup
BOTH semi-finals of the Division 2A Cup took place on Saturday evening. Recently crowned Div 2A League winners Herberstown were in Hyde Park and the visitors emerged worthy 3-0 winners as Kevin Meade, Oisin O'Grady and Mike Whelan with the goals as Herberstown booked their place in the final.
Joining them will be Abbey who notched up a brilliant away victory away to Meanus coming out on top of a five-goal thriller. The vital goals were  scored by  Lenord Plunkett (2) and  Wayne o Keeffe.
This will  be Abbey's first appearance in Jackman in a number of years. This final will take place next Sunday. It will also be a busy few days for Herberstown as on this Tuesday they play Pike in the Open Cup.
