The man appeared before Newcastle West District Court

A MAN who was described by gardaí as being “highly intoxicated” in a public place, has been fined and wished well on his journey to recovery by a judge.

Martin Enright, who had an address in Loghill East, Knockaderry at the time of the offence, but whose current address is unknown, appeared before Newcastle West District Court.

The court heard that on July 18, 2023, gardaí were called to an address and they encountered Mr Enright “highly intoxicated” attempting to walk into Newcastle West.

He was arrested and issued with a fixed penalty notice, which was not paid.

Later that year on November 2, gardaí were again called to a Newcaslte West address and found Mr Enright in an intoxicated state and he told gardaí to “f*** off”.

The court heard that the 34-year-old has 12 previous convictions, eight of which are for road traffic offences and three for public order offences, but that the public order offences date back some years to 2018.

Barrister for Mr Enright, Conn McMahon said: “These offences arise out of a chaotic lifestyle arising out of drug and alcohol abuse.”

Mr McMahon told the court his client completed a 30-day treatment programme in 2024 and that he spends three days a week going to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

He said his client is “quite apologetic” for his behaviour and that he is the father of a young child and wants to be more involved in that child's life.

Judge Nicola Jane Andrews took into account that Mr Enright had undergone and engaged with treatment and wished him the “best on his journey.”

Mr Enright was fined €100 and given one month to pay the fine.
