NA PIARSAIGH'S Peter Casey feels that the city club have been the standard bearers in Limerick hurling over the last fifteen years. Since 2015, Na Piarsaigh have won the Limerick senior hurling championship seven times.
“It's fantastic for the club, over the last fifteen years we have really been standard bearers and it's been brilliant and we just try to continue to push the standards as much we can,” Peter Casey told Leader Sport.
Casey believes that the younger players in Na Piarsaigh squad have added strength and depth to Shane O'Neill's side over the last number of years.
“I think it's just the young lads that come in every time, there are new guys every year. And then the lads that are at the latter end of their career are trying to squeeze the most out of themselves as they can. It's a joint effort, we are obviously very lucky with the backroom team we have, everyone is so professional and it continues to drive standards every night,” the Limerick senior hurler said.
The 28-year-old said it was special to get over the line after last year's disappointment in the Limerick SHC final.
“You have to enjoy these moments, this is what we train for in terms of trying to win county titles and celebrating with our best friends since we've had from four or five years of age.”
Casey's return to full fitness has been a big boost for Na Piarsaigh. Last year he was only fit enough to make an appearance off the substitutes bench after he suffered a serious ankle injury against Tipperary in the Munster SHC.
“Injuries are part and parcel of sport, I'm no different to anyone else, I've had a few injuries. It does make it a small bit sweeter, but again it's about the collective and not about any individual.”
The Na Piarsaigh attacker was on target with 0-3 from play in Sunday's 2-25 to 2-18 extra time victory over Doon in the Limerick SHC final. Casey has featured at number eleven for Na Piarsaigh this year.
“There is probably a bit of freedom to it, I've probably played inside a good few times as well. There is that freedom and Shane gives that and it is just brilliant.”
Na Piarsaigh will now switch their focus to a Munster SHC quarter-final against Ballygunner.
“We've had some ding dong battles with Ballygunner down through the years. I'm sure in two weeks’ time it will be no different.”
