LIMERICK senior hurling star Tom Morrissey says he’s relishing the benefits of the split season, enjoying the chance to balance his inter-county commitments and club commitments with Ahane throughout the year.
"I love coming back to the club championship, obviously I would like it to be a bit more succesful and see a quarter-final, semi-final and a county final. I've always said it since the split season has been introuduced, it's nice that you are able to come back and you're here for the whole campaign and you really drive things on with the club" said Tom Morrissey after Ahane's victory over Patrickswell round four of the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship.
Ahane got their championship campaign back on track with a victory over Patrickswell on in round four of the Limerick SHC. They know that a win over Doon and a defeat for either Kilmallock or Ballybrown will see them advance into the quarter-finals.
Ahane have suffered defeats to Ballybrown and Na Piarsaigh, played out a draw with Kilmallock and got the better of Patrickswell in their four games in the Limerick SHC.
"We have to win to be in with any chance and that's going to be the focus and try and get one last performance out of us. And as I said, hopefully that will take us into knockout hurling.
"We finished with four points last year but didn't get out of the group. We are on three points going into the last round, we've been knocking on the door we have finished in fifth place in the last five years. We'd love to get out of the group and see a quarter-final, we have to win the last day out if that's going to be a possibility," added Morrissey.
Morrissey has been in impressive scoring form for Ahane hitting 0-43 in their four games in the Limerick SHC. His brother Dan and captain Ciaran Barry have been delivered notable performances at the back for John Meskell's side.
John O'Connor, Jack Cosgrove and Conor Ryan have all made an impact in their first year playing at senior level for the east Limerick club. Limerick U20 star Cosgrove scored 0-4 from play in Ahane's victory over Patrickswell.
"Jack picked up an injury in the minor county semi-final but it was great to have him back (against Patrickswell). He is a great inside forward us and he played very well in the first two rounds and he was definitely missed the last day out against Na Piarsaigh. He has really taken to senior at his stride and it was great to him back."
Ahane also meet Doon in the Limerick premier minor hurling final on Sunday in Cappamore at 4pm.
