LIMERICK senior hurling manager John Kiely has said he is grateful for the role Declan Hannon has played as team captain in the last seven seasons.

“We wish Declan Hannon well. We are very grateful to Declan for what he has done in the last seven seasons. He's the most successful captain Limerick have ever had and he has put in a huge effort. We are very grateful for that,” John Kiely told Leader Sport.

Cian Lynch has been announced as captain of the Limerick senior hurlers for 2025, while Na Piarsaigh's William O'Donoghue has been appointed as vice captain.

“We wish Cian (Lynch) and William (O'Donoghue) the very best as captain and vice-captain for 2025.

“Cian is Cian, he's been vice captain for the last seven years as well and has done a fantastic job. We are blessed with the leaders we have in the group. There's leaders right across the panel. It's not about the captain or vice captain at end of the day. It's about everybody doing their best in their role and their capacity.”

Lynch, who has recently been announced as captain, has been part of the Limerick senior hurling team since 2015. The Patrickswell clubman captained the Shannonsiders to the All-Ireland senior hurling title in 2023, while Declan Hannon was injured. Lynch becomes the first Limerick captain from the ‘Well since Ciaran Carey in 2004.

Declan Hannon has been captain of the team since 2017. Hannon has seen his team win five All-Ireland senior hurling titles and six Munster senior hurling championships in that period.

Lynch will begin his term as captain when the Limerick senior hurlers get their Allianz Hurling League campaign under way against Cork on February 1 at 7:30pm in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
