A VOLUNTARY community-based group is looking for local support as they "hope that the people of Limerick will help, and support" them.
In a bid to combat rural and social isolation, Women’s Shed Limerick aims to regroup like-minded women of any age, so they can have a place to talk and contribute, as well as share practical skills and knowledge.
As over 200 women attended and signed up as members in September, “it was very clear” that there was interest in a Women’s Shed in Limerick.
Founders of Women’s Shed Limerick, Emer Scully and Sinead O’Beirne-Brinn, felt more services available to women were needed in Limerick.
“It was very clear that there was interest in a Women’s Shed,” The ideas that came from the women included Women’s Health Programmes, Yoga, Art Classes, Self Defence Classes, Citizens Advice Chat, Car Maintenance and Social Media Classes. “It was a wide variety of interests, which is just fantastic because it’s about going outside your comfort zone," commented Emer.
Since the group kicked off with registration in September, the Committee and facilitators met twice a week to work on offering the Women’s Shed Members a selection of Free Talks and Demos.
“We are so proud of what we have achieved in such a short time and being a fully functioning community group within the area,” added Ms. Scully.
As they are hoping to have structured courses in the year, their biggest obstacle is locating a permanent home for their shed.
“With members growing every day and how quickly we are proceeding, we do hope that the people of Limerick will help, and support us to overcome this obstacle,” she concluded.
