SERVING and retired members of An Garda Siochána turned out in force in Newcastle West at the weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first gardai into the town.
Pouring rain did little to dampen the spirits of locals and schoolchildren who lined the Town Square as members of the gardaí marched from the Station House to Desmond Castle for a special wreath laying and medal ceremony.
Inspector Pat Brennan stated that there was "a great day all round for everyone" as gardaí marched into the courthouse to present their credentials and later received their centenary medals to mark a century of duty by the force.
Desmond Castle was also open for the entire day, offering access to two floors and in through the grounds, as part of the celebrations that took place from 12-3pm.
A ceremonial unit, dressed in original clothing from 1922, played the part of the first six garda members to be stationed in the town a century ago.
The event formed part of the programme events across the Limerick Division to mark 100 years of An Garda Siochána.
