Limerick Council ‘must publish climate change policies’

Limerick council has been urged to publish its policies on climate adaptation

LOCAL Labour election candidate Anne Cronin has urged Limerick council to publish its policies on climate adaptation.

Speaking after the local climate change protest last week, in which more than 300 local schoolchildren took time out to demonstrate, Ms Cronin pointed out that Limerick council should have a local strategy on how to deal with climate change.

“Local authorities have been set a deadline for the completion of local strategies by September 30, 2019, but we’ve no sign of the Limerick plans,” said Ms Cronin.

“Just under 28 weeks until that date does not give much time for public consultation. Dublin Local Authorities are engaged in significant public consultation at the moment and Limerick and other cities must do likewise. The sheer passion and desire for change was evident on the streets of Limerick during the Climate Strike. We must not allow those chants to fade into memory. They must be underwritten by action and publishing the plans now is a proactive step that the local authorities can take.”

Limerick City and County Council has been contacted by the Limerick Leader for comment.
