Cosmetics stolen from Limerick pharmacy were never recovered

Solicitor Ted McCarthy said his client had five children dependent on her

A PROBATION report is to be prepared on Mary Griffin, 275 Hyde Rd, Limerick who pleaded, at Newcastle West court, to two counts of theft, both of which occurred on the same date last year.

Inspector Andrew Lacey said that last June 15, the defendant went into Dooley’s Pharmacy in Newcastle West where she selected a number of cosmetic items worth €150 and left without paying. Later the same day, she returned and took other items, again worth €150. None of the property was recovered. The defendant, Judge Mary Larkin was told, had 42 previous convictions, 25 of these for theft.

Pleading for his client, solicitor Ted McCarthy said she had seven children, five of whom were still dependant on her. She was now a lone parent as she had split from her partner, he said. Her situation was not good, he said. “There was another person with her at the time,” he added.

Judge Larkin noted the defendant had a record of similar offences. S he ordered a report to be prepared to assess the defendant’s suitability for community service of 50 hours or one month imprisonment. The case was adjourned to May 7.
