TROY Studios has said it is “in discussion with a number of other exciting potential projects” considering Limerick and Ireland as a production base.

It comes following confirmation that the big-budget sci-fi series Nightflyers, which was filmed at Troy, has been cancelled and will not return for a second series.

Management at the studio have confirmed that the studio is currently in discussion on other “exciting potential projects” to replace Nightflyers, stressing that is a “particularly exciting time in the industry as the demand for studio space is more buoyant than ever”.

“We anticipate securing another major production for Troy in the near future – watch this space,” said a spokesperson.

It is understood that the studio is not concerned at the Nightflyers cancellation, which was confirmed to the Limerick Leader by NBCUniversal, who said it “has not been picked up for additional seasons”.

The €53m budget production had a 91% Irish crew with an average of 320 employees on site in each day. It received funding of €850,000 from the Irish Film Board.

Nightflyers started production at Troy in February of last year, where huge sets were constructed, including a scale set of the ship itself. Large numbers of extras were required.

Troy has since announced a major expansion which could see up to 800 staff working at the facility in Plassey’s National Technology Park.

The studio, based at the old Dell building, is currently adding a fourth sound stage to its offering.

The spokesperson for Troy noted that NBCU’s Syfy had taken the decision not to renew Nightflyers for a second season but stressed that it had “a positive partnership” with the Nightflyers producers on the “first production at our new studio lot in Limerick”.

“It in turn helped place Troy Studios firmly on the international circuit of production studios. Troy Studios appreciate the productive collaboration, which in turn also helped to make Troy Studios as well-known as it is today, a familiar name in the global production world.

“Both NBCU and Troy look forward to collaborating again in the future. Most importantly, the Nightflyers series was the genesis for establishing a crew base in the Limerick area and with our training partners, we will continue to grow the skills needed for the film and TV production industry here in the Mid-West.

“Currently, Troy Studios is focused on expanding our sound stage space with the addition of a fourth sound stage on site, bringing Troy Studio’s sound stage space to a total of 100,000 sq.ft. Construction works have commenced. When complete it will position Troy as the largest international standard film and TV studio in Ireland.”
