MEGHANN Scully is single and not too pushed about mingling.
The SPIN South West presenter, The Leader columnist and author is hosting a unique event that combines blind and speed dating on Friday night to help those alone on Valentine’s Day find love. Amber, the nightclub at House, is the venue and attendees won’t be able to see each other as they will be blindfolded.
Meghann will be trying to bring couples together on Friday night but she isn’t too worried about her own love life. She is a single for a year and she says it is her decision.
“I've been the one to end previous relationships because I feel when you are in a relationship with someone they should bring out the best in you, inspire you and support you and vice versa but if that isn't happening or has stopped, then I feel the need to step away when it cannot be salvaged. People change as do circumstances and sometimes when it isn't working or doesn't feel right then it isn't meant to be.
“For now, I am focusing on my career and when the time is right and I am ready to share my life with someone else, I know it will happen. I won't chase it as I know these things happen when you least expect it,” said Meghann.
She says there is pressure to be in a couple but she chooses to ignore it.
“I don't think people need to be in a relationship to be successful or complete. My family ask me every weekend if I have met someone and they seem very eager for me to ‘settle down’. But the more it is said to me the more I feel I need to prove that I am happy being single.”
Not being in a relationship, Meghann says she has learned to enjoy her own company “much more and I've found contentment in sitting in silence which took work and patience – something that comes naturally when in a relationship”.
The dating scene has changed dramatically in the last 10 years.
“Online dating is hugely popular. I've the odd friend that met a guy on a night out but more and more it is from Tinder and Bumble. I am on Tinder but I am traditional, as in, if I match someone I won't message first.
“A trend on Tinder now is that nobody messages. Guys wait for girls and girls wait for guys so there's no communication. It seems people just want to check if they 'match' and are satisfied with that. I've been on some Tinder dates and I have no bad stories. I have heard of people meeting husbands and wives online so it works from time to time.” Meghann would prefer to meet someone in the more traditional way of a social setting or through a friend.
“I think women now feel more confident in asking a guy out. If I saw a guy I thought was handsome in a bar, I would have no problem saying hello. I admire it if a man approaches me early in the night to introduce himself, not that it happens very often.”
