THE SOCIAL Democrats are going into political battle in County Limerick with a warrior.

Local historian and tourism business owner, Trevor McCarthy has been selected as their local election candidate for Cappamore-Kilmallock. He is the first candidate to contest a local election in Limerick County for the party.

Mr McCarthy is an active and energetic member of the Kilmallock community, best known as the sword-wielding, armour-clad knight of Kilmallock Medieval Tours. He also teaches medieval history to children across Limerick and Munster through the Heritage Council’s Heritage in Schools scheme.

A board member of Kilmallock Tourism, Mr McCarthy believes Limerick’s history and heritage has the potential to create huge economic success for many small towns and villages.

He said he was “deeply honoured and excited” to be chosen.

“Limerick is my home and my identity. It’s where my friends and family live and where I want to build a business and raise a family. The decisions made over the next five years will shape Limerick and we need a fresh voice, different to that of the older parties.

“Together with my party colleagues Sarah-Jane Hennelly, Kieran Walsh and Elisa O’Donovan, we will bring new ideas, sorely needed transparency and long term, evidence-based planning to the council,” said Mr McCarthy.
