GARDAI in Limerick are warning retailers to beware of a “change” scam which has come to light in recent weeks.

“This is where a person enters a shop and looks to change a large number of notes. Then the person might change their mind and deliberately confuse the member of staff that is dealing with him or her,” said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.

“Ultimately they will leave the shop with more cash than they entered it with. Often the scam isn’t noticed until the till is counted at the end of business,” she added.

Gardai say one local retailer is at a loss of €250 having been targeted.

“These scammers are very skilful in confusing the shop staff so my advice is simply do not change any notes for bigger or smaller notes. If a person is insistent then call a manager or another person,” said Sgt Leetch.
