MINISTER for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring TD has announced that over €400,000 will be invested into the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails.

The grant is part of the €8 million Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme where 18 strategic projects across the country received funding to boost active tourism.

Limerick Country TD and Minister of State for Finance Patrick O'Donovan welcomes the €406,710 investment from his fellow Fine Gael member, despite not receiving the maximum grant of €500,000.

“The importance and the potential of the Ballyhoura Trails, so this investment by the Government will, I know, be very welcome by people across the area,” Mr O’Donovan lauded.

Figures from Fáilte Ireland show that the active tourism markets such as cycling and hiking are worth approximately €1.2 billion to the Irish economy.

Limerick County TD, Tom Neville hopes the investment for the trail will not only contribute the national economy but will also be a boost for rural Limerick as well.

“These strategic projects will enhance existing recreational facilities for the benefit of the communities who use them every day, and also for the many tourists who enjoy visiting our rural areas,” Mr Neville TD added.
