Gardai say people should not keep cash at home

GARDAI in Limerick are appealing to homeowners not to keep large amounts of cash in their homes.

The appeal comes following a number of recent burglaries during which cash was targeted.

“If you are aware of any elderly relatives who maybe storing cash in their homes, please encourage them to bring it to a bank or credit union but not to leave it in the home.

"Burglars are very experienced at finding items of value and while you might believe that you have hidden the cash or jewellery very well it can still be found and removed,” said divisional crime prevention officer, Sergeant Ber Leetch.

According to gardai those responsible for the most of the recent break-ins entered homes across the city and county by forcing rear windows or doors.

“Cash, jewellery and tools were the most popular items taken,” said a spokesperson.
