A LEARNER-driver is to face court proceedings after he was detected driving almost 40km above the speed limit on the outskirts of the city last night.

According to gardai, the driver was travelling at 159kph on the M20 – 39km above the speed limit.

It is also alleged there were no ‘L’ plates displayed on the vehicle which was not taxed or insured.

“Limerick. Doing 159kph. No L plates, not accomp. No tax / insurance. FCPN for speed, car impounded+summons to follow,” read a message posted on the @GardaTraffic twitter account.

Separately, two other drivers who were allegedly racing on the motorway last night have been fined €80 and will each receive 3 penalty points on their licences.
