Ellie McCaffrey came highly commended and got second place in her category
TWO Limerick students earned coveted places as finalists in the National Soapbox competition in Dublin.
Ellie McCaffrey from Laurel Hill FCJ and Dylan O’Donnell from Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh both represented the county at the national final.
The theme was whether or not it’s time to ban social media for those under the age of 16.
Ms McCaffrey came second with a highly commended honour in the age 17 and over category, while Mr O’Donnell won the Limerick competition for those aged 16 and under and competed in a final against eight others.

Competitors had to deliver a three-minute speech on the topic to persuade the audience and judges of their argument.
Chair of the judging panel and Assistant Chief Executive, Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), Paula Butler said: “Reaching the national final of the Europe Direct Soapbox Competition is an outstanding achievement, reflecting months of preparation and success in regional heats across Ireland. The standard of this year’s finalists was exceptional. Each speaker brought fresh, thought-provoking perspectives to a complex and timely topic. Their confidence, clarity, and passion for debate truly impressed the judges and demonstrated the value of open discussion on issues that matter to society."
Prizes were a €1,000 One4all voucher for each winner and a €500 One4all voucher for each runner-up.
