A COLD home, no presents under the tree, struggling to scrimp together a Christmas Day meal and potential mounting debt - these are just some of the worries facing families in the Mid-West who will need the support of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) this December.
The demand for the services of SVP has risen by seven percent since last year and the charity expects to get more than 25,000 requests overall for help this year.
The theme of this year’s appeal is ‘The Wonder of Christmas’ to reflect a grim reality of many families wondering how they will put food on the table, keep their homes warm and afford to buy toys this December.

SVP regional president Bridget Healy said: “The recent budget provided some welcome measures, but rising costs mean many households still cannot afford the basics, especially one-parent families, low-income workers, people with disabilities and their careers, and those in insecure housing.
“Every donation ensures we can respond quickly and locally where need is greatest.”
Ms Healy also thanked the students from Laurel Hill Coláiste for enhancing the launch of this year’s appeal with their Christmas carols and she thanked Maria Byrne for sharing her experience as an SVP member and for explaining how donations can provide practical support to those in need.
Anyone who finds themselves in need in the Mid-West can phone 061 317327 to speak to someone in confidence who will assess their needs sensitively and compassionately.
Those who want to give to SVP can donate online on www.svp.ie and nominate your local area, by phoning 0818 176176, posting a cheque payable to Society of St Vincent de Paul to Society of St Vincent de Paul, Mid-West Regional Office, Ozanam House, Hartstonge Street, Limerick, V94 W2D3 or people can donate through the blue envelopes, which will be distributed in newspapers, churches and distributed to homes.
