LIMERICK will host its National Day of Commemoration Ceremony, to honour all Irishmen and Irishwomen who have died in past wars or during service with the United Nations and other international organisations in the service of peace.

This is the thirteenth year that Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) will host the event, which is set to take place on Sunday, July 13, on the grounds of the Council Buildings at Merchant’s Quay.

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery will lay a wreath honouring those who lost their lives in service during the event which begins at 11am.

The ceremony will include the raising of the National Flag and the observance of a minute’s silence. A guard of honour will be provided by the 12th Infantry Battalion based at Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick.

A musical element will be provided by Limerick based choir ‘The Curraghgower Singers’ under the direction of choir master, Mr. Timothy Schinnick, along with Bugler, Don Phelan, Uilleann Piper, Colleen Shanks and Drummer, Alberto De Blas.

The multi-faith ceremony is open to members of the public, with representatives from the Roman Catholic Church, Church of Ireland, the Methodist Church, the Quakers and the Islamic Community leading the ceremony of prayers and readings.

People attending the ceremony in Limerick are advised to arrive not later than 15 minutes beforehand as seating will be limited.

The area around Merchant’s Quay is currently subject to works associated with the King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme. This will result in reduced on-site public parking and restricted access to some areas.

Attendees are asked to allow extra time for arrival, observe all traffic management signage, and follow directions from stewards on the day.
