AS Autumn approaches, September 2024 promises a celestial treat for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts alike. The month kicks off with the α-Aurigid meteor shower peaking on September 1. While modest in activity with only 5-6 meteors per hour, these bright streaks offer excellent photography opportunities against the dark, moonless sky.
Mark your calendars for September 8, when Saturn reaches opposition. This is the best time to observe the ringed planet, as it will be at its brightest and closest to Earth. Just a few days later, on September 15, Uranus begins its retrograde motion in Aquarius, providing an interesting target for telescope owners.
The autumnal equinox occurs on September 22, heralding the astronomical start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. This day also marks equal hours of daylight and darkness.
Neptune takes centre stage on September 21 as it reaches opposition in Pisces.
Although challenging to spot with the naked eye, a good pair of binoculars or a small telescope will reveal this distant ice giant.

Throughout the month, Venus dazzles as the 'Evening Star in the western sky after sunset.
Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury also make appearances, offering a planetary parade for early risers and night owls alike.
September's Full Moon, traditionally known as the 'Harvest Moon', occurs on September 18. This year, it will be accompanied by a partial lunar eclipse, adding an extra touch of drama to the night sky.
As you gaze upward, keep an eye out for the International Space Station passing overhead. This remarkable feat of human engineering orbits Earth every 93 minutes and can often be seen as a bright, moving point of light.
The Limerick Astronomy Club restarts its monthly meetings on the first Thursday of every month from September, in Mary Immaculate College, Room 202 at 8pm.
