Limerick Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the blaze at a residence in Kilmurry Village after receiving the report at 11.41pm on Thursday night, June 20.

It is understood the fire was well established upon arrival and the elderly man was located deceased in the residence.

A spokesperson for University of Limerick said village staff acted immediately after the alarm was raised but a man had sadly passed away.

“A garda investigation is underway and UL will be making no further comment at this time,” said the spokesperson for the college.

Kilmurry Village is an on-campus student accommodation village in the University of Limerick. Outside of the college academic semesters the village can be occupied by people other than students.
