THE RESULTS are in for seven Limerick City East seats, with the battle for the final two seats coming to the fore until the last second.

It has been a rollercoaster ride of an election, as surprises took hold until the very end.

Both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael got two seats a piece out of seven, while Sinn Féin candidate Ursula Gavan and Green Party candidate Seán Hartigan beat all others at the final post.

Cllr Catherine Slattery was a decisive victor from the beginning, and secured seat one as the poll-topper.

In a turn of events, first-time candidate Fine Gael’s Peter Doyle got seat two and surpassed the quota by 119 votes. Cllr Slattery and Cllr Doyle were elected on the first count.

The two shared their surplus votes between transfer-friendly candidates, making Joe Pond and Elena Secas the next two councillors to be elected in counts two and three.

Dividing more surplus votes once again meant count eight saw Cllr Sarah Kiely be re-elected on Sunday afternoon.

Time slipped on as the final two seats saw three hopefuls battle it out, with Cllr Gavan and Cllr Hartigan coming out as victorious without making quota, thanks to the process of elimination.

Eric Nelligan of Aontú missed out narrowly at the end as the battle between three hopefuls for two seats came down to the wire, with Mr Nelligan missing out by 201 votes to Ursula Gavan.
