BREAKING: Limerick councillor elected while in Spain for wedding!

Cllr Tommy O'Sullivan celebrates his election and a Limerick Munster final win in Spain

A LIMERICK councillor is on cloud nine as he was elected a councillor after flying to Spain for a wedding.

Cllr Tommy O’Sullivan, Fine Gael, was elected on the 10th count in the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District. The Kilfinane man had to miss his election due to a family wedding that was booked months ago.

After being at the count centre all day on Saturday he flew to Spain at 3am on Sunday morning. He told Limerick Live this Sunday evening he is “wrecked”.

“I haven’t got a wink of sleep. It's not sinking in at all yet. I was on the phone all day getting updates and we watched the match over here - I feel like I played the match,” laughed Cllr O’Sullivan.

He was in a battle with Kilmallock’s Mike Donegan but took the final seat. Cllr O’Sullivan’s name was called out to warm applause despite not being there.

Although he said it felt like he was there because “I have a half Kilfinane out here!”.

He said it was some achievement for Fine Gael to get three candidates in Cappamore-Kilmallock.

“I’d say we're the only constituency in Ireland where three non-sitting councillors got elected for the party,” said Cllr O’Sullivan, who thanked his family and his team for all the work on the ground.

He especially thanked his campaign manager Pat Creed who 45 years ago was the campaign manager for the great Matt O’Callaghan when when he was first elected.

Cllr O’Sullivan said he will “sleep for a week” but first up is his close relations wedding on Monday.
