It is the only County Limerick area, which has seen no changes

ALL SIX seats in the Newcastle West Municipal District have now been filled and it is the only County Limerick area, which has seen no changes.

The election for this area was split in two essentially, as Feohanagh man, Cllr Jerome Scanlan (non-party), Cllr Liam Galvin (Fine Gael) from Abbeyfeale and Cllr Michael Collins (Fianna Fáil) of Newcastle West all retained their seats and were voted through on the first count.

There was a long and slow wait for the remaining seats then, as it was count eight before the remaining three seats were filled.

Count 8 saw Abbeyfeale man Cllr Francis Foley (Fianna Fáil), Cllr Tom Ruddle (Fine Gael) of Newcastle West and Cllr John Sheahan (Fine Gael) of Glin all come through and retain their seats.

Cllr Foley got in with a final count of 1,756 votes, Cllr Ruddle had 1,836 and Cllr Sheahan had 1,751 votes.

Cllr Foley told Limerick Live that the wait had been a “nail biting” one and he was dedicating his seat to his mother, who is recovering from a fall.

This result presented a rather unusual situation, where all six sitting councillors retained their seats and will continue to represent their local areas for another term.

There had been six new names in the hat for the Newcastle West area, but none were successful in their bid for a seat.
