'Disgusting and degrading': election posters vandalised in Limerick

The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning

'Disgusting and degrading' - election posters damaged in Limerick

A number of posters for election candidate Suzzie O’Deniyi were damaged

A NUMBER of candidates in the upcoming local elections have vowed they will not be "intimidated" after their campaign posters were defaced and damaged in Limerick city.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a number of individuals vandalised posters on Brookville Avenue in Clareview.

The posters were ripped off poles and left on the ground with one candidate's face removed from a number of posters.

Suzzie O’Deniyi, candidate for Limerick City North, condemned the vandalism and theft of campaign posters across the constituency.
"Several posters and numerous other campaign materials have been defaced or stolen in what can only be described as a disgusting and degrading act by a very small minority of individuals.
"These actions are not just illegal but fundamentally undermine the democratic process. The use of military-style tactics and intimidation seeks to silence political expression and stifle healthy debate".
Ms O’Deniyi said that this behaviour does not reflect the values of the people of Limerick.
"The vast majority of Limerick residents are respectful, law-abiding citizens who support fair and open elections.
"The actions of a few should not overshadow the integrity and spirit of our community. I urge everyone to reject these acts of vandalism and to stand together in promoting a positive and respectful campaign environment.
"Women, in particular, have been targeted the most in this election, facing intimidation and harassment. We will not tolerate it. I will not tolerate it."

Councillor Olivia O'Sullivan added that candidates would not be intimidated by the vandalism.

"This is ridiculous behaviour, and a criminal offence to deface, destroy or remove election posters.

"If they think it is going to put off other candidates, then I can assure them they are very wrong. In fact, it is a great motivator coming into the final week of the campaign!"

Limerick Live have contacted the garda press office in relation to the incident.
