AN INFORMATION booklet outlining the new role of Ireland’s first directly elected mayor is being posted to residents across Limerick.
It’s part of a wider information campaign to raise awareness about what the new role of directly elected mayor will entail, what powers and responsibilities the new role will have, and what the key differences will be between the previous system and the new system.
Limerick will go to the polls on Friday, June 7, to elect a new first citizen with a wide range of new powers.
It will be the first time in Ireland the public has elected a first citizen.
The information campaign is being co-ordinated by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government and Planning, Alan Dillon TD emphasised: “This will be an historic vote for the people of Limerick.
"They will be the first people in the country to have an opportunity to directly elect a mayor for their city and county. Having a Mayor with executive powers is a significant reform for local government in Ireland, so it’s important that people have a good understanding of what this new role will involve and what it will mean for their area.

"This booklet, building on a comprehensive information campaign we have been running over the last few weeks, will provide a comprehensive guide to how this new position will work. I would urge people to read it and be sure to have their say - and make history - on June 7.”
Chief Executive of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly: “There is already great interest and discussion in Limerick about the directly elected Mayor, but we want to ensure that everyone has enough information regarding the new office of Mayor which they will be voting for in June.
"Limerick City & County Council has worked closely with the Department to produce this Information Booklet. I am proud that this county will be making history in June and I would encourage everyone to engage with the information provided.”
