THE CITY CENTRE route that a giant-winged Pegasus will take around Limerick to open Riverfest weekend has been revealed.

As part of the May Bank Holiday weekend festivities, there is a special late addition to proceedings.

That comes in the form of the Pégase show, which will see the mythical Greek creature stalk the streets in a carnival-style parade.

French firm Planète Vapeur will deliver the spectacle to the streets of Limerick.

Councillors have been briefed on the route the parade will take.

At the metropolitan meeting, Eileen Coleman, council’s head of tourism, arts and festivals said it all will get under way at 9.30pm on Friday, May 3.

It will kick off from the former Cleeve’s toffee factory at North Circular Road before travelling along O’Callaghan Strand.

From there, the parade will cross Sarsfield Bridge, and then proceed to Arthur’s Quay.

It will wind up outside Limerick’s council premises in Merchant’s Quay.

Along this route, there will be viewing spots, Ms Coleman confirmed.

As well as the many returning favourites - think the Riverfestival Village at Arthur’s Quay Park and the panoramic wheel - a new outdoor party area is to open at Howley’s Quay across the Riverfest weekend.

The city will once again play host to a barbecue competition, while theatre group Fidget Feet will provide bingo fever, and there will be a Fashion Fest event led by local style queen Celia Holman Lee.

Sunday will see the city centre streets turn into an athletics track as the Regeneron Great Limerick Run returns.

There will be thrills and spills on the River Shannon with kayaking, dragon boats, angling, rowing, boat tours, and swimming all making a splash across the holiday weekend.
