The leisure centre, which contains the swimming pool in Askeaton
It has been confirmed that the Askeaton swimming pool will reopen.
A tender has been approved for the facility and a contractor to renovate the centre has been identified, Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) have confirmed.
The popular leisure centre was closed on March 16, 2023 due to necessary upgrade works, including flood and defence systems, upgrading of the pool and sustainability works which will ‘future proof’ the facility.
“The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media have awarded significant grant funding for the works,” according to a spokesperson of LCCC.
“The council is currently working with the Department to seek their approval to award the contract. Once their approval is received, it is proposed to award the contract, with a view to works commencing as soon as possible thereafter,” they said.
'Severe disappointment' was expressed by those who used the facility daily and weekly and the closure which happened in March 2023, came as a surprise to many.
Public consultations happened just a month before the closure in February last year, where the local community and those living further afield opposed the news.
A 12-month closure was the outset plan, but regular facility users quickly began losing hope as time ‘dragged on’ and renovation details were mostly withheld from the public.
“They need to get it open and get it right - we need to let the public know what's happening,” said local councillor of the municipal district Adare-Rathkeale, John O’Donoghue.
Cllr O’Donoghue continued on by saying there is ‘severe disappointment’ surrounding the closure and rumours whispered of reopening dates, as it ‘drags on’.
“The original date given was St Paddy’s Day 2024, but now, we will be lucky to get it open this side of Christmas,” he said.
Askeaton pool is the only 25m public pool from Limerick city to north Kerry and many have to travel to Ballybunion, which is an approximately 50 minute journey from Askeaton.
