‘Big and ugly’ bus shelter in Limerick is removed as it ‘wasn’t ideal’

Now you see it, now you don't: There was ‘outrage’ in Kilmallock when a new bus shelter was erected outside the local church

A BUS SHELTER, previously branded as “big and ugly”, has been removed from a county Limerick town.

An ‘outcry’ from the public seems to be the reason behind Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) removing the newly-erected bus shelter outside of Kilmallock’s Ss Peter and Paul church.

The bus stop was installed outside the historical and widely-admired church on Sheares Street at the beginning of December.

Due to the public’s dissatisfaction and ‘outrage’, the bus stop has now been removed and put into storage.

It is thought that it will be reinstalled early next year, but the location for the shelter has not been determined, as of yet.

A spokesperson on behalf of LCCC said: “The location of a bus shelter on R512 at Sheares street, Kilmallock has been reviewed and following a consultation with local representatives, the council can confirm the shelter has been removed.

“A new location for the bus shelter will be determined in early 2024.”

Local councillor PJ Carey said he had been ‘inundated’ with calls from residents in Kilmallock, who said that it was “disrespectful” to have the bus stop located directly outside the town's church.

“It had to be taken down because the church is a national monument and the structure is highly-regarded - you can’t take from the church by putting it directly outside.

“Parking was an issue, as Kilmallock is narrow in itself - the school and the creché are across from the church and, of course, funerals and such ceremonies would be taking place, which wasn’t ideal either.

“The real reason was because the church is a national monument and needs to be safeguarded.”

Speculating on where the bus shelter may be moved to - as no confirmation has yet been given - Cllr Carey said: “It hasn’t been confirmed to me where it will be moved to, or where its new location will be, but I think it would fit well across from the other bus stop that is there now, across from the school.”
