There’s snow place like home: Santa surrounded by Billy and his family at Murroe’s 2022 festive market
THE CHRISTMAS spirit is alive and well in Murroe again this year, as 16-year-old Billy Moylan is gearing up to host a Christmas market that promises to be even more spectacular than last year’s successful event.
The festivities are set to kick off on Sunday, December 10, at 12pm in the heart of Murroe, at Muintir na Tíre Hall.
Billy, the mastermind behind this festive affair, expressed his excitement, saying: “I'm really excited about the market again this year due to the success of last year.”
The market has since grown in scale, featuring over 20 stalls that offer a diverse range of items, including crafts, metalwork, paintings from local artists, and delectable Christmas-style baked goods.
Additionally, sports enthusiasts can find something special at the market with sports wear from the local GAA club on offer.
One of the highlights of the day will be the grand entrance of Santa Claus himself.
St Nick will make a stylish arrival in Murroe’s famed tractor, Ted, at 1:30pm, and in order to welcome him in style, Billy encourages everyone to dust off their Christmas jumpers and join the festive spirit.
On top of the market, the teen has organised a fundraising raffle with an impressive array of 20 prizes. Attendees can purchase tickets on the day, and all proceeds will be dedicated to a noble cause – the Milford Care Centre.
The prizes up for grabs include an overnight stay in a hotel and afternoon tea in the notable Cashel Palace.
All proceeds from last year’s raffle went to the Neonatal Unit at the University Maternity Hospital Limerick as Billy himself was a premature baby born on December 15, almost 17 years ago.
The Christmas market organised by this enterprising 16-year-old promises to be a delightful occasion for the community, blending festive cheer with a commitment to giving back.
The idea to begin hosting the now annual markets came to Billy in a business class while studying at St Mary’s Secondary School, Newport.
“I felt that the community was lacking in some community spirit since the Covid pandemic”, he said.
So mark your calendars, don your Christmas attire, and head to Murroe on December 10 to be part of this heartwarming celebration.
