Mayor of Limerick reveals he will step away from politics

Stepping away: Mayor Gerald Mitchell

MAYOR Gerald Mitchell has dropped a political bombshell by revealing to the Limerick Leader he is to step away from public life.

The Hospital-based councillor will finish his term as mayor of the city and county of Limerick but will not seek re-election in the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District next year.

Cllr Mitchell has been spoken of as a possible Fine Gael running mate for Minister of State Patrick O'Donovan in the next General Election and as a candidate in the democratically elected mayor race following his increased profile as Limerick's first citizen.

Cllr Mitchell, aged in his 60s, has informed the Fine Gael party of his decision to give them time to decide if they want to add to the three candidates - Cllr John Egan, Greg Conway and Noreen Stokes - chosen to run in Cappamore-Kilmallock.

Cllr Mitchell said he was stepping away from politics for personal reasons.

“It is a big decision and a sad decision. Basically, I want to get my life back. I’ve worked seven days a week. I’ve helped a lot of people since I was elected in 2014. I’ve given a lot to the party. Then with my business it is very hard to get it all done. I just want to take some time for myself,” said Cllr Mitchell, who is an auctioneer.

He denies the extra workload and the number of functions he has to attend as mayor has precipitated his decision.

“No, I wouldn’t think so. It is an honour and a privilege to serve as mayor and serve the people of Limerick city and county. My policy when I went into politics was to help people and serve the people. Public service is not self service - that was my motto - as well as you are never too important to be nice. I gave it my all - 100% - and it was a privilege to do so.

“I hope I have made a contribution to Limerick city and county and helped a lot of people. I was delighted to do so. It was an honour to be elected by the people. I would like to thank all the people who walked the roads with me and supported me, colleagues from all parties and council staff,” said Cllr Mitchell.

He is the fifth Mitchell in local politics beginning with Thomas B Mitchell, who was the first chairman of Limerick County Council elected in 1889.

Gerald Mitchell will be the last mayor before they are democratically elected. Edward, EJ and Tom Mitchell have all been elected.

“Maybe there might be another Mitchell going forward down the road - you never know,” said Cllr Mitchell, who will continue to fill his duties as mayor of the city and county of Limerick until the term ends.

“I hope to execute the role with honour and integrity - basing your thoughts and actions on values rather than personal gain,” said Cllr Mitchell.
