Improvements have been announced along the Corbally Road which borders Scoil Ide
COUNCILLORS have approved major upgrades to a road that is used by hundreds of students every weekday.
At this month’s metropolitan meeting, members gave the green light to upgrades to Corbally Road in the city.
As a result of this, the existing footpaths on the thoroughfare will be upgraded to create a shared walking and cycling path on the side of the road which passes Scoil Íde national school, and a path on the opposite side.
The shared path, council has said will allow safe-access to the school students, as well as for vulnerable road users.
They added it will also encourage more cycling and walking along Corbally Road and cut the reliance on cars.
Since the upgrade is on public land, it was the job of councillors to decide.
They gave the green light with Cllr Frankie Daly proposing it, and Cllr Conor Sheehan seconding.
Praise was given to Ray D'Arcy, the principal of Scoil Ide who engaged with local residents on the measure.
Green councillor Sasa Nowak said 744 students will now benefit from the work.
“It is making the way to school safer and healthier, and it brings them to somewhere where they have to go every day much more safely,” she said.
Sinn Fein councillor Tom Collopy said “common sense” had triumphed, while Cllr Daly said “99.9%” of people in the area are happy with the proposal.
There was also support from Cllrs Olivia O'Sullivan, Sharon Benson and Kieran O'Hanlon.
