A WARNING has been issued to the public about bankcard thefts following an incident involving an elderly "gentleman" in county Limerick.
According to Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street garda station, the theft occurred last Thursday, in Caherconlish.
A woman is said to have approached the man at approximately 11:30am, and requested to use his mobile phone. In an act of kindness, he handed over his phone, allowing her to make a call.
The woman returned the phone to the man after appearing to make a call, however, the following day, the man checked his phone case for his bankcard, and realised that he had fell victim to a theft.
He immediately reported the incident to his bank, which informed him that his bank card had been used for three unauthorized transactions on the same day the woman borrowed his phone.
Sgt Leetch expressed her concern about this incident, stressing the public to exercise caution when approached by strangers asking to use their phones and to be aware of the potential risks associated with such requests.
