Why replace your windows when a fresh coat of paint can transform them at a fraction of the cost? Painting your PVC, uPVC, or Aluclad window frames is an easy, cost-effective way to refresh your home’s exterior.

Follow our step-by-step guide to learn how to achieve a professional finish that lasts!

Tools for the Job:
 Deltec Gold 36mm Masking Tape
 Microfibre Cloth
 Fluxaf UPVC Cleaner and Restorer
 Fine Grade Sandpaper (320 grit)
 Ralston Aqua All-Primer tinted to the colour of your choice
 Ralston Aqua Semi-Mat / Satin / High Gloss tinted to the colour of your choice
 Van Dam Brush
 Dust Sheets

Step 1: Prepare the Area for Painting As with all painting projects, preparation is key.

Lay down dust sheets to protect the ground and mask off both sides of the window frame using Deltec Gold Masking Tape. This ensures crisp edges and prevents paint from bleeding onto unwanted areas.

Use a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust and dirt. Paint won’t adhere properly on unclean surfaces. This is even more important when working with a smooth surface that won’t be sanded down before priming.

Fully clean and degrease your windows with a specialist degreasing product such as the Fluxaf UPVC Cleaner and Restorer. Pay close attention to corners and crevices to prevent peeling later down the line.

Use a fresh damp cloth to remove any cleaner residue, then let the surface dry completely before progressing on to the next step.

Step 2: Apply A Primer
A high-quality primer is essential for strong adhesion and long-lasting results.

We like Ralston Aqua All-Primer because it offers great adhesion and can be tinted to your preferred colour. Stir the primer well before use.

When it comes to application, a good quality brush makes all the difference. With that in mind, we recommend Van Dam Brushes as they feature a pointed head that allows for greater precision and reach. However, any good-quality brush should do the trick.

Use your brush to apply a single, even coat of Ralston Aqua All-Primer. Keep a damp cloth on-hand to wipe any drips away.

Pro Tip: Avoid overloading the brush with paint as this can lead to unwanted drips.

A common error is to apply the next coat before the previous coat has had a chance to
fully dry.

Primers in particular become ‘touch-dry’ quite quickly, but this does not mean they are ready to be overcoated. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions with respect to drying times.

Step 3: Sand Between Coats
Once the primer has fully dried, lightly sand the surface with 320-grit sandpaper between coats. Wipe away any dust before applying the next coat. This will help to ensure a smooth, professional finish,

Step 4: Apply A Topcoat
While the primer may give you a great colour and finish, it’s the topcoat that provides essential protection against the elements. So don’t be tempted to skip this step!

Start by selecting your preferred finish. Ralston Aqua topcoats come in a variety of finishes including:
 Matt (7% sheen) gives a soft, modern look
 Semi-Matt/Eggshell (20% sheen) results in a subtle sheen with easy
maintenance
 Satin (35% sheen) offers a balance between gloss and matte
 High Gloss (80% sheen) for a striking, polished finish

Stir your chosen Ralston Aqua paint well and apply two coats. Ensure each coat has fully dried before lightly sanding, wiping, and applying the next coat. Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions for more information on drying, overcoating and curing times.

Pro Tip: Open the windows for a couple of hours each day so the paint can dry and cure properly. Full curing can take several days, so handle them with care in the meantime.
